The C.E.O of Filmhouse Cinemas, Kene Mkparu, recently clocked 50. His family threw a birthday party that had his extended family members, friends, business colleagues and several Nollywood actors in attendance.
Kene’s birthday was filled with several entertaining performances from the celebrant and at some point; he had to feature one or a group of people. First of all, he made his entrance to the event by performing Phyno’s fada fada afterwards he led a praise and worship session with gospel artiste, Sammy Okposo and his band backing him up. There was a point when his nuclear and extended families were on stage dancing with him. There was one performance with his wife; there were two performances with his kids and another one was with Nollywood actors.
Speaking with NOLLYZONE, the Filmhouse Cinemas boss talked about why he danced and led several performances at his birthday party. “We set out wanting to thank God; I wanted to thank God and thank people and I wanted to do crazy things. There somewhere in the Bible where David danced and made a fool of himself because there was something God did for him or was doing for him and he wanted to express thanksgiving, he danced like a crazy man, that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to let my head down, let loose and have fun and I’m so pleased that everybody joined in…I’m not sure I’m going to end today yet”.
Kene became more specific about the reason why he ‘wanted to do crazy things’. Here, he expressed what he’s most a grateful to God for. “My family; My girls. My wife and my kids. That is what I’m most grateful about, because everything comes from that. This party came from my family. What inspires me a lot starts with my family and I’m grateful to God about that. I have an understanding wife. My wife takes me around the world a lot and it takes an understanding family to be able to deal with that and that is what God has done for us and I’m grateful everyday for that. We’ve been through some tough times but how God has taken us through that starts from the family and I’m so pleased about that.
“And I’m grateful for what God has done for our business. We set out to open 25 cinemas in 6 years and become the biggest cinema chain in West-Africa, we became the biggest cinema chain in West-Africa in three years and I’m grateful for that and that’s why I wanted to express that gratitude and I’m glad I did”.
Many of the Nollywood actors who came to celebrate with Kene Mkparu were surprised to know that Kene has turned 50. They were of the opinion that he looks younger than that age. Still speaking with Nollyzone, Kene expressed what makes him look younger; “It’s called redefining aging…redefining the standards of aging. But I tell you what, it’s a balanced life. You’ve got to balance your life; you’ve got to work hard. Nothing wrong with too much work load but you ought to balance it: balance it with family; balance it with exercise and balance it with fun. Balance it with good ‘let your head down stuffs’.
“Be happy. I wake up in the morning and go on YouTube to watch funny things; I start my day with laughter, it is very important – your whole body wakes up. With laughter, your mind is set right. I try to also balance my eating. All of these things tell on my body”.
